The JADCO team returned from Cape Town having been part of something genuinely meaningful — a week of hard work, community spirit, and real change for children who deserve better.
Adam Riccio and Carly Stovell are home from the Mellon Educate Building Blitz, and the experience has clearly left its mark. In conversations since their return, both have described a week that was physically exhausting, emotionally powerful, and deeply reaffirming — not only of the importance of Mellon Educate’s work, but of the difference that can be made when people from the construction industry show up and use their skills for something beyond commercial gain.
What Was Achieved
The Building Blitz programme delivered real, lasting improvements to school facilities in communities where overcrowding, dilapidation, and lack of resources have long undermined the learning environment. Classrooms were built. Walls were painted. Toilets were repaired. Outdoor spaces were cleared and reimagined. And through all of it, the children whose schools were being transformed were present — watching, sometimes helping, and clearly aware that something important was happening for them.
The impact is measurable in square metres of new classroom space and litres of paint applied. But it is also felt in something harder to quantify: the dignity and pride that comes with having a school that says, in brick and mortar, that these children’s futures matter.
Gratitude, Reflection, and What Comes Next
JADCO is enormously proud of Adam and Carly, and of the wider community of supporters who made the fundraising campaign such a success. The donations raised in the UK construction sector travelled all the way to Cape Town and landed in the form of real materials, real improvements, and real hope for real children.
This will not be the last time JADCO supports Mellon Educate. The experience has deepened the organisation’s connection to the cause and reinforced its belief that businesses in the construction sector have both the skills and the responsibility to contribute something meaningful beyond their balance sheets.
